JULJA to the USA

Now we have our eyes in the U.S. market and for this, we need your help. In February 2014 we applied and were accepted to a project called Made in Designland that is a showcase and a U.S tour of 18 months of new, innovative Finnish design. Before this tour begins, we need your help to prepare ourselves for project and present our best. With this Indiegogo campaign we can not only cover the costs of the project but also arrange our own fashion show at the States.

We’re now looking for a funding of 25 000 euros that will allow us to design and produce needed collections for the U.S. tour and also make it possible for us to arrange and attend our own fashion show at the States.

By pre-ordering some of the products from our Running from the dream collection or supporting us by buying other perks you will help us getting one step closer to our dream.

Our new JULJA Groupie Tank Tops are avilable now!

Please share the word and help us achieving our dream! We will keep you updated about the project here so follow this blog to hear more about our feelings and news about the crowdfunding campaign.

Video from Running from the dream fashion show

On Thursday we had our Running from the dream fashion show at shopping center Hansa in Turku during Hansamania event. The show went great although we arranged it with more than a tight schedule. We were happy to have lively dancers from Dance Studio Funky as our models once again as it's always so easy to work with them. And they definitely take over the stage ;) We want to thank everyone who made the show possible, you know who you are! And now, a small video clip from the show so you can take a look if you couldn't make it on Thursday.

Enjoy your weekend! And remember to subscribe to our Youtube channel so you won't miss any of our upcoming videos ;)

GTIE

Happy Wednesday morning,

I've been on the road for a week now. All kinds of meetings, breakfast events and seminars have been on my schedule while I've been here in Helsinki. Today I'm finally travelling back home because tomorrow we're shooting new second hand clothes for our online store and of course we have the fashion show in shopping center Hansa. Soon I'll have to run again but before that, a few words from last weeks meeting with gTIE

Last Fall when I worked on my thesis, I interviewed Jenni Ahtiainen from gTIE among other professionals from the fields of fashion, design and business. During the interview we also tossed a few cooperation ideas in the air. Last Thursday I visited their new store to talk a little bit more about those early stage ideas. First of all, if you haven't visited their new premises yet, I definitely recommend you to. A boutique and a whiskey bar put in together, what a brilliant idea! And they also had plenty of room downstairs where they're going to arrange different "club events" once a month. The whole space is full of feeling.

Unfortunately, I can't reveal you any of our upcoming plans yet. Instead, I can show you a few photos from the meeting. You'll be hearing more when is the right time for it.

By the way, gTIE is also participating to Made in Designland project. Our crowdfunding campaign for our participation to the tour will be launched on Tuesday 25th March. Keep your eyes and ears open for more!

xoxo

Insights to our production

Hello everyone,

My name is Johanna Hakala and I’m the Production Manager at JULJA. I will share some insights with you all on how it was like to set up the production side of our brand, which is in fact probably the most important part of it all (besides the design). After all, if the clothing itself doesn’t live up to our own ideas it’s no use getting it out there.

In May 2013 we won the Hyundai Brilliant Young Entrepreneur-award, which awarded us 15 000 €. Through this award, we grew a big bunch of confidence realizing that somebody else believed in us (other than ourselves :D). Also it was a big step towards making JULJA a “real job” for the three of us involved.

Before we received the award, I, Johanna, had already begun searching for factories that would manufacture our clothes. We considered Finland, but quite early I realized that the options available were either too small or didn’t have the capacity we were looking for. Nora had more information at hand regarding other clothing labels and their production countries, through which we decided that Estonia was our best fit. And trust me, this is where the real work began, because it’s not like there are a handful of factories to chose from.  I collected the whole list of factories through googling, googling and… yepp, that’s right, google (this is NOT a sponsored post.). After that I sent about a hundred emails and got about 20 answers, through which I chose the three best places, which we then visited just before the JA Start Up Finals. I believe that a big part of the reason to why we won the Hyundai Award was that we had real information of the process itself, and that we really visited the places. It gave us credibility.

Our production is located in Pärnu, Estonia at a company called Pambu Oü with about 33 employees working there. We’ve visited the company many times, which is fairly easy because it is so close to Finland. The geographical location is one of our top criteria for where the production would be held, but also that the factory is a place where the working conditions are good. We want to see the people who make our clothes and in addition to that we can speak Finnish to Pambu’s owner Aadu (which can be quite amusing sometimes :D ).

The production cycle is really raw in the fashion industry. When the current season is going on, we are already planning for one year ahead. We try to change this cycle in JULJA by also manufacturing and selling our permanent products. We want to extend the lifetime of our clothes into making them more sustainable and timeless.

Besides these everyday, behind-the-scenes-activities of running a fashion label, we’re also involved in campaigns that help spread the word about us. We are currently a part of the project “Made in Designland”, which is a showcase of 50 new, innovative and cutting edge Finnish design companies touring the U.S. during 18 months. We are so exited to be selected to this amazing tour!

In a few weeks time we will be launching a crowdfunding campaign at Indiegogo to fund our participation in this project. In the crowdfunding campaign our contributors can pre-order clothes from our “Running from the dream”–collection, so if you’re interested in getting some exclusive, one-of-a-kind pieces from our second collection, keep an eye on Indiegogo!

Also, we will soon start selling our new JULJA logo tops. So, as you can see, we have plenty of things going on and we want to invite you all to follow our journey.

xoxo
